Campus Child Care Advisory Committee

Charge

The Campus Child Care Advisory Committee makes recommendations and provides advice to the Executive Director Residential Services and Childcare Solutions. In turn, the Executive Director Residential Services and Childcare Solutions works with colleagues across the University to obtain their support and approval for recommendations and suggestions that enhance the UC San Diego environment and the community.

The Campus Child Care Advisory Committee also provides a focus for childcare concerns within the UC San Diego community by facilitating discussion on the preservation and expansion of high-quality childcare facilities and services for UC San Diego.

The committee advises the Executive Director Residential Services and Childcare Solutions in matters concerning the UC San Diego community and its needs for childcare, including:

  • Raise awareness on childcare matters with particular attention to the impact of access and affordability on the wellbeing and success of parenting staff, faculty, and students in service of the university vision of being student centered, research driven, patient dedicated, and service oriented.
  • Serve as the primary venue for discussion and formulation of policies to be recommended to the Executive Director Residential Services and Childcare Solutions concerning childcare issues at UC San Diego.
  • Serve as a source and repository for all information, surveys, studies, and policies concerning childcare needs of the UC San Diego community.
  • Collaborate with other campus units, departments, programs, or representatives who work to support parenting students, staff, and faculty (e.g., OASIS, First-Gen, Hope Scholars, Triton Underground Scholars, and research program directors).
  • Make recommendations, supported with fiscal analyses, on childcare services which aim to meet the unique needs of parenting faculty, students, and staff who live, learn, and work on and off campus.
  • Work to maintain and improve access to high-quality childcare facilities and services for families with children prenatal to 14 years (which may include collaboration with other departments to access health screenings, breastfeeding support services, ongoing parent education for families, and programs to support families during regular work schedules).

Currently, childcare at UC San Diego is primarily offered through the UC San Diego Early Childhood Education Center for children ages 3 months to 5 years old. This is supplemented by additional camp programs primarily serving school-age children. In order to facilitate the preservation and expansion of high-quality childcare facilities and services for UC San Diego, the committee will:

  • Apprise the Executive Director Residential Services and Childcare Solutions of the immediate and long-term needs of childcare services, who in turn reports those needs to the Chancellor on a routine basis.
  • Work to maintain access to high-quality, affordable, dependable childcare for parenting faculty, students, and staff within the UC San Diego community.
  • Review specific issues and existing policies, procedures, and services related to the needs of families with young children.
  • Advocate for and recommend high-quality early care and education programs, including issues related to licensing and quality assurance for all campus childcare programs.
  • Communicate information about available resources for families within the UC San Diego community, including faculty, students, and staff families.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to the Executive Director Residential Services and Childcare Solutions in matters concerning the UC San Diego community and its needs for childcare services.
